About Werdwot
Werdwot is a woman-owned and women-operated Ethiopian jewelry business that celebrates timeless beauty, heritage, and feminine strength through thoughtful handmade craftsmanship.
Our name is inspired by Ye Kake Werdwot, a courageous revolutionary woman from the rural Gurage region of Ethiopia. In 1855 G.C., at a time when women were confined by tradition and denied basic rights, she traveled from village to village, fearlessly advocating for women’s dignity, freedom, and equal opportunity. Her legacy of resilience, grace, and creative fire continues to guide and inspire every piece we create.
We craft bold, timeless statement earrings primarily from calabash — a strong yet lightweight natural material deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture and tradition. Each piece is carefully hand-carved and finished with spontaneous, artistic hand-painting, making every pair truly one of a kind. Paired with elegant gold-plated studs, our designs beautifully balance organic textures with refined finishes — a harmonious blend of earth and elegance.
Our current collection, እንዝርት (Spindle), draws inspiration from the graceful, ever-rotating Ethiopian spindle. It celebrates the fluid power of femininity — the dynamic rhythm of a woman’s life, balancing softness and determination, motion and stillness, strength and grace.
At Werdwot, jewelry is more than an accessory. Each creation tells a story of Ethiopian artistry, cultural pride, and the quiet power of handmade feminine beauty. As we grow, we are committed to exploring more local materials and traditional techniques, bringing Ethiopia’s rich craftsmanship into contemporary, meaningful design.
Beyond creating beautiful pieces, we are deeply committed to community impact. We actively address real challenges facing girls and women in Ethiopia — particularly period poverty, which contributes to high rates of school dropout. Empowerment is not just a value we speak about; it is something we practice every day through our work.
Timeless. Bold. Rooted in Ethiopia.
